Should the Australian parliament debate Cultivated Meat as they did in the EU? Australia’s alternative protein opportunity is huge, but is it possible to have a productive debate on alternative proteins? For the future of Australian agriculture I hope so!
With the global demand for protein set to increase by 70 – 200% (depending on which report you read!) there’s not enough arable land or fresh water on the planet to meet this demand using the current global food system. To meet this demand animal protein and alternative proteins will have to coexist for the foreseeable future. If Australia doesn’t get behind alternative proteins to supplement our current animal agriculture we risk missing a massive global opportunity.
