The future of Synthetic Biology
Alternative Proteins My take on it all

The Commercialisation of Synthetic Biology

“Synbio will eat the world, and the world will eat synbio.”

The commercialisation of Synthetic Biology is accelerating and revealing it’s full impact on the global food system.

➡️ Alpine Bio have harvested their largest crop yet of casein containing soybeans to make cheese. (I’ve been following them for a while.)
➡️ Moolec Science have just released their first commercial batch of high GLA safflower.
➡️ The EVERY Company, Cauldron Ferm, Perfect Day and others have just received grants to design high volume commercial production facilities.

These are just a tiny sample of what’s going on in new technologies that will re-shape our global food system. We need 50 to 70 % more food to feed the growing global population of 9.7 bn and middle classes of 2050 sustainably, healthily and fairly. And let’s not forget their 1.3 billion pet cats and dogs, all eating nearly as much protein as a human!

We simply can’t just scale our current global food system to meet this need. There’s no answer in just doing more of the same, not without deforesting the entire plant, and that probably won’t end well!

The commercialisation of Synthetic Biology and other new technologies using less resources and polluting less are going to be an essential part of the solution.

As I say, “We cannot solve todays’ problems using yesterdays’ technologies.”
