Highlights
Fibre is rapidly becoming the next blockbuster nutrient, evolving from a “boring” digestive aid into a high-performance functional powerhouse through the “Fibremaxxing” trend.
- The Trend Pivot: Consumers are moving away from restrictive dieting towards “Fibremaxxing,” where they intentionally load up on fibre to hit 25–35g daily for gut health and longevity.
- Benefit-Stacking: Ardent Mills’ Anke Golde highlights that fibre is now being paired with other functional benefits, creating a multi-layered value proposition for health-conscious shoppers.
- Taste is King: The R&D challenge has shifted from simply “adding fibre” to maintaining the sensory experience, ensuring high-fibre grain-based foods don’t sacrifice texture or flavour.
- Strategic Foresight: Success in this space requires looking beyond the next quarter and using tools like the FutureCUBED™ process to navigate the disruption of traditional grain markets.
Is fibre the new protein? If you’ve been watching the social media space lately, you’ll know the answer is a resounding “Yes!” … but with a twist that’s going to change how you formulate products forever!
I was fortunate to catch a great video from Ardent Mills recently featuring Anke Golde, their Senior Director of Research and Development. She hit the nail right on the head regarding the “Fibremaxxing” trend. It’s an amazing shift in consumer behaviour that we simply can’t ignore if we want to stay relevant in the 2026 food landscape!
The Rise of Fibremaxxing
Just think about this for a minute… for years, fibre was the unglamorous cousin of the nutrition world. It was about “regularity” and dusty bran cereals. But today? It’s being rebranded as the ultimate tool for gut health, blood sugar control, and even mental clarity.

“Fibremaxxing” isn’t just a catchy TikTok hashtag, it’s a strategic move by consumers to reach or exceed the daily recommended 25–35g of fibre. They aren’t just eating more; they’re “maxxing” out the benefits. As I’ve discussed in my thoughts on longevity and aging, the gut microbiome is the new frontier for health, and fibre is the fuel that keeps it running!
Benefit-Stacking: The New R&D Gold Standard
One of Anke’s most insightful points was the shift towards “benefit-stacking.” But here’s the problem… In the past, a product was either “high fibre” or “low sugar” or “high protein.” Today’s consumer wants it all at once!
They want grain-based foods that deliver high fibre plus protein, plus prebiotics, plus sustained energy. It’s about layering these benefits so the consumer feels like they’re getting a massive nutritional “bang for their buck.”
The Great Taste Hurdle
Let’s be honest… the biggest concern from manufacturers is that “high fibre equals cardboard.” If it doesn’t taste great, it won’t sell. Period!

Ardent Mills is doing some great work here, focusing on maintaining that crucial “sensory experience” while upping the fibre content. We’re talking about specialty grains and innovative processing that keeps bread soft, crackers crunchy, and flavours vibrant. If you aren’t investing in R&D that prioritises taste while Fibremaxxing, you’re essentially planning to fail!
Why This Matters for Your Strategy
We are at a crossroads. I’ve spoken at length about how the food industry needs to evolve, or face a slow decline. If you haven’t seen my takes on The death of the Food Industry by 2050 (RIP), now is the time to check it out. We must move towards eating our way to a healthy lifespan by integrating these functional benefits into everyday staples.
This isn’t just about a single product launch; it’s about a strategic pivot. This is exactly why I developed the FutureCUBED™ process. We need to look at Horizon Scanning to see where these trends are going, use Future Foresight to map out how they’ll disrupt your category, and then build an actionable Strategy to win.

Are you ready to gut-check your product pipeline? The future of food isn’t just about what we take out (sugar, salt, fat); it’s about the amazing things we’re putting back in. And right now, fibre is leading the charge!
