There’s a shift that is currently rocking the food and agriculture industries, yet most people are looking in the entirely wrong direction. I believe that pets are the “canaries in the coal mine” for human health trends. They share our homes, our air, and increasingly, our wellness obsession. But in 2026, they aren’t just following our lead. They are leading us.
The High-Speed Lab: Why Dogs are the Ultimate Accelerators
Why is the pet sector outpacing human longevity research? It’s simple biology.
One of the biggest hurdles in human aging research is time. If I want to test a “longevity pill” on humans, I might have to wait 30, 40, or 50 years to see if it actually works. Who has that kind of time? Not the investors, and certainly not the patients!
But dogs? They live, age, and unfortunately pass away in a fraction of the time we do. This creates a high-speed lab where we can see the results of interventions in just 3 to 5 years. It is a massive strategic accelerator!
What’s even more amazing is that dogs develop the same age-related issues we do: osteoarthritis, cognitive decline, and metabolic shifts. If we can solve these in dogs, we aren’t just helping Fido; we are creating a proven roadmap for human medicine.
Breakthroughs on the Horizon: Loyal and Genflow
We are seeing some intriguing work being done in this space. Take the company Loyal (Cellular Longevity, Inc.). They aren’t just making “healthy treats”: they are targeting the biology of aging itself!

The FDA has already indicated a “reasonable expectation of effectiveness,” and we are looking at potential conditional approval by late 2026. This isn’t science fiction; it’s happening now.
Then there’s Genflow Biosciences. They are working on gene therapies targeting the SIRT6 gene (the “longevity gene”) in beagles. By using companion dogs as a translational model, they can move through clinical milestones at a pace that is simply impossible in human-only trials.
The danger for those in the food and supplement industry is to think that this is “just another pet trend.” It isn’t. It’s a total reimagining of biological age management.

I was recently looking through the ADM Pet Nutrition 2025 Insights Report, and the data is staggering. Get this: 78% of pet owners are now explicitly interested in longevity for their pets. Even more telling? 85% of owners prioritise their pet’s nutrition just as much as their own!
ADM is putting its money where its mouth is. They’ve built an incredible R&D ecosystem, including the Animal Nutrition Technology Center in Decatur, Illinois, which uses pilot extrusion for rapid prototyping of functional pet foods.
They are also leaning heavily into microbiome science through their Biopôle center in Switzerland. Why? Because the gut-brain axis is just as critical for a dog’s cognitive health as it is for yours. They even acquired PetDine in Fort Collins to ensure they have the manufacturing muscle to bring these complex, functional supplements to market at scale.
