What if you could reap all the life-extending, metabolic-boosting benefits of a 36-hour fast without actually skipping a single meal? Just think about that for a minute… It sounds like science fiction, doesn’t it? But as I always say, the future has a habit of arriving much faster than we expect!
We are witnessing a monumental shift in the wellness space. For decades, “health” has been synonymous with “lifestyle”, the gruelling discipline of willpower, restrictive diets, and strict exercise regimes. But we’re entering a new era where we stop fighting our biology and start hacking it. Welcome to the world of tech-enabled longevity.
The End of Willpower?
I’m excited to share some ground breaking research recently highlighted by NutraIngredients. A clinical trial involving a fasting mimetic supplement called Mimio has shown that we can actually replicate the molecular effects of fasting through clever biochemistry.

The results are very encouraging! Participants taking this specific blend of metabolites, including spermidine and nicotinamide, saw significant improvements in their cardiometabolic health markers. We’re talking about better total cholesterol, improved LDL levels, and stabilised fasting glucose.
But here’s the kicker: 91% of participants reported better appetite regulation and reduced “food noise.” All of this was achieved without any changes to their lifestyle or diet. No fasting required!
Why Food Leaders Must Pay Attention
If you’re leading a brand in the food, beverage, or agriculture sectors, you might be asking, “What’s wrong with this picture for my business?”. Well, nothing: if you’re prepared! But if you’re still stuck in the old “low-fat, high-fibre” marketing loop, you’re missing the boat.
This tech represents a move toward “built-in” health. When consumers can manage their hunger and metabolic markers via a supplement or a functionally enhanced food product, their relationship with traditional “diet” products changes overnight. We are moving from external control to internal biological optimisation.

My biggest concern is that many businesses are too slow to integrate these insights into their long-term planning. Through my work in horizon scanning and strategic foresight, I see this as a massive opportunity for the industry to pivot. Imagine a future where the food we produce doesn’t just satisfy hunger, but actively signals our cells to perform at their peak.
Framing the Future
We need to stop thinking about food as just fuel and start seeing it as information. The data from this Mimio study proves that we can “programme” the body’s response. For the ag-tech sector, this might mean breeding crops for specific metabolite concentrations that trigger these fasting pathways naturally. For big brands, it means moving beyond “clean label” into “functional bio-hacking.”

It’s great to be present at the intersection of these trends, helping businesses navigate this disruption. I’ve spoken about these shifts at various speaking engagements recently, and the energy is palpable. Soon the “Longevity Economy” will no longer be just for the billionaire class; it’s coming to a supermarket shelf near you.
Are you ready to build health directly into your product line? Or will you wait for the disruption to swallow your market share? It’s time to choose…
