What if you could see the future before it even happens?
Just imagine for a second… what if you could test every single strategic decision, every new product formulation, and every supply chain tweak in a safe, virtual world before committing a single cent of capital in the real one?
Well, I’m happy to tell you that this isn’t science fiction. It’s here, it’s real, and it’s called a Digital Twin.
As a futurist, I spend my life looking at the horizon. And right now, Digital Twins are shining like a beacon for anyone in the food, beverage, and agriculture industries. If you aren’t already thinking about how to integrate this technology into your future foresight, you’re essentially flying blind in a storm!
Let’s dive into why this is the ultimate tool for navigating the next decade of disruption.

What Exactly is a Digital Twin?
In its simplest form, a Digital Twin is a virtual replica of a physical system.
It’s not just a 3D model. It’s a living, breathing data-driven representation that behaves exactly like its real-world counterpart. Think of it as a bridge between the physical and digital worlds. By using real-time data from sensors (IoT), artificial intelligence, and advanced analytics, we can mirror everything from a single piece of equipment to an entire global supply chain.
When viewing this tech many people think it’s just for engineers on a factory floor.
WRONG.
Digital Twins are a strategic powerhouse for C-suite leaders. They allow us to “test the future” by running thousands of “What If?” scenarios. What if a major shipping lane closes? What if the cost of a key ingredient triples? What if consumer preferences shift overnight toward personalised immunity-boosting snacks?
With a Digital Twin, you don’t have to guess. You simulate.
Where Digital Twins Meet FutureCUBED™
If you’ve followed my consulting work, you know I live and breathe the FutureCUBED™ process. It’s how I help organisations transform existential threats into strategic opportunities.
Digital Twins fit perfectly into two critical stages of this framework:
- Horizon Scanning: As we discover emerging trends and technologies, we can feed these variables into our Digital Twins. It’s about seeing the impact of a new technology, like synthetic biology or precision fermentation, on your current business model before it even hits the mainstream.
- Future Foresight: This is where the magic happens! We use the Twins to map out alternative futures. By adjusting the “critical uncertainties” in our digital model, we can see which versions of the future your company is prepared for, and where you’re dangerously exposed.
It’s about moving from reactive guessing to proactive strategy. And let me tell you, in 2026, the speed of change is so fast that if you’re reacting, you’re already too late!
Beyond the Factory Floor: The Digital Twin of Everything
I often get asked, “Tony, where should we start?”
Most people think of the production line. And yes, monitoring equipment to prevent breakdowns is great. But we need to think bigger. We need to think about the Digital Twin of Everything.
The Supply Chain Twin
Imagine a virtual map of your entire global supply chain. Every ship, every truck, every warehouse… all updated in real-time.

When a geopolitical shock hits (and they will!), you can stress-test your resilience instantly. You can find the “breaking point” of your supply chain and fix it without actually having it break. This is how you stay profitable while your competitors are scrambling to find a secondary supplier.
The Product Formulation Twin
Why spend months and millions on physical R&D trials for a new functional beverage?
With Digital Twins, we will be able to simulate the molecular interactions of new ingredients. We can then predict shelf-life, taste profiles, and nutritional density in a virtual lab. It’ll be faster, cheaper, and it allows for much more radical innovation.
Health’s Flight Simulator: The Ultimate Personalisation
Now, let’s talk about my favourite concept in this space: Health’s Flight Simulator.
Just think about this for a minute…
We are moving into the “Longevity Economy,” where consumers don’t just want food; they want results. They want food that is perfectly tuned to their unique microbiome, their DNA, and their current health status.
In the future, we won’t just have Digital Twins of factories; we will have Digital Twins of consumers.

A consumer’s Digital Twin will act as a “flight simulator” for their health. They can “feed” their twin a specific diet in the digital world and see the impact on their inflammation levels, energy, and long-term health markers years into the future.
For food and beverage brands, this is a GOLDEN RULE: THE DATA IS THE PRODUCT.
If you can provide the functional foods that “fly” that consumer’s health simulator toward a longer, healthier life, you have a customer for life. This is the ultimate level of hyper-personalisation, and it’s all driven by Digital Twin technology.
Strategic Advantage: Faster, Safer, Smarter
The biggest benefit of using Digital Twins in your future foresight strategy is the ability to fail fast and fail cheap.
In the real world, failure is expensive. It costs jobs, it costs reputation, and it costs millions of dollars. In the digital world? Failure is just a data point.
By using simulations, you can do things like:
- Optimise for Sustainability: Simulate how changing your packaging or sourcing will impact your carbon footprint over the next 10 years.
- Predict Consumer Behaviour: Use AI-driven twins of market segments to see how a price increase or a brand re-positioning will be received before you launch.
- Enhance Transparency: Share your “Supply Chain Twin” data with consumers who are increasingly demanding to know exactly where their food comes from.
How to Start Implementing Digital Twin Thinking
You don’t need a multi-billion dollar tech budget to start. You just need a change in mindset.
- Audit Your Data: You can’t build a twin without data. Start identifying where your “dark data” is, the useful information your company collects but never uses.
- Identify a Pilot: Don’t try to twin the whole company at once. Pick one critical uncertainty, maybe it’s a volatile ingredient supply or a specific production bottleneck, and build a pilot twin for that.
- Connect Your Strategy: Ensure your digital twin project isn’t just a “tech project” hidden in the IT department. It must be led by the C-suite and connected directly to your 5- and 10-year planning horizons.
The Future is a Simulation
We’re entering an era where the boundary between the physical and digital is dissolving. Those who embrace Digital Twins will be the ones who lead the food industry into the middle of the 21st century. Those who don’t? Well… they’ll be left wondering what hit them.
I’m fortunate to work with leaders who are already making these moves. Confidence comes when a CEO can say, “We’ve simulated 100 versions of this strategy, and this is the one with the highest probability of success.”
So, I have to ask… are you ready to stop guessing and start simulating?
The future is waiting. Let’s go and get it!
