Have you ever wondered what happens when a traditional, family-run sausage brand decides to stop just looking at the past and starts building for the next century? I’m intrigued to see what’s happening over at HECK! They aren’t just making sausages; they’re building what I call a “food moat.”
What’s wrong with the “business as usual” approach in the food industry? Everything! Relying solely on traditional methods in an era of massive technological disruption is like trying to hold back the tide with a broom. It simply won’t work…
The journey of the Keeble family and their brand, HECK, has been fascinating for some time now. They’ve always been high-energy and forward-thinking, but their latest moves are nothing short of amazing. They’re blending deep-rooted tradition with cutting-edge technology to create a strategic resilience that every leader in the food and agriculture space should be watching closely.
The Concept of the ‘Food Moat’
In the world of finance, Warren Buffett famously looks for companies with an “economic moat”: a structural advantage that protects them from competitors. But in the 2020s, we need to talk about a “food moat.”
A food moat is about strategic resilience. It’s about building layers of protection against the existential threats of climate change, livestock disruption, energy volatility, and shifting consumer preferences. It’s not just about surviving; it’s about thriving in a future that looks nothing like our past.
HECK is doing exactly this. They are looking at the critical uncertainties of the next decade and deciding to own their future rather than being a victim of it. Just think about this for a minute: a sausage company that is investing in cellular agriculture, vertical farming, and renewable energy all at once. That is visionary leadership!
Pillar 1: Deep Tech and Cellular Agriculture
One of my major concerns for the current meat industry is its vulnerability to livestock disruption. Whether it’s disease, land-use pressures, or changing ethical standards, the traditional supply chain is under immense pressure.
HECK has tackled this head-on by collaborating with Ivy Farm.
By partnering with Ivy Farm, HECK is exploring how to integrate high-quality, cultivated meat into their product range. This isn’t about replacing their traditional heritage; it’s about diversifying their protein portfolio.
It’s a brilliant move! It allows them to maintain their brand identity as “flavour experts” while mitigating the risks associated with 100% reliance on traditional animal agriculture. They are scanning the horizon and realising that the future of protein is “and,” not “or.”
Pillar 2: Vertical Farming for Flavour and Resilience
If you’ve ever tasted a HECK sausage, you know that herbs and fresh ingredients are at the heart of their recipes. But how do you ensure a consistent, year-round supply of high-quality herbs when the climate is becoming increasingly unpredictable?
Enter Vertical Future.

HECK is using vertical farming technology to produce their own herbs on-site. This is a game-changer for several reasons:
- Zero Food Miles: The herbs move from the growing shelf to the production line in minutes, not days.
- Total Control: No more worrying about droughts, floods, or pesticide residues.
- Consistency: The flavour profile remains identical every single time.
By bringing the “farm” inside the factory, they’ve shortened their supply chain to the point of irrelevance. That is how you build a moat!
Pillar 3: Sausages Powered by Sunshine
We can’t talk about the future of food without talking about energy. The volatility of energy prices is a massive concern for any manufacturing business. HECK has addressed this by installing 433 solar panels on their site.

I love the phrase “sausages powered by sunshine.” It’s punchy, it’s positive, and it’s a direct response to the need for sustainable energy independence. By generating their own power, they are decoupling much of their production costs from the whims of the global energy market. Good news in the current chaotic energy market!
It’s a triple win: it lowers costs, reduces their carbon footprint, and adds another layer of resilience to their food moat.
The Strategy Behind the Innovation
How do you even begin to map out a future this complex? This is where my proprietary FutureCUBED™ process comes into play. When I work with leaders at major food organisations we look at the three critical dimensions of future success:
- Horizon Scanning: Discovering the trends and technologies (like cellular agriculture and vertical farming) before they become mainstream.
- Future Foresight: Mapping out alternative futures. What happens if livestock prices double? What if consumer demand for “traditional” meat drops by 30%?
- Actionable Strategy: This is the “implementation” phase. It’s exactly what HECK is doing by signing partnerships and installing hardware TODAY.
Without a structured approach to foresight, these technologies can seem like distractions. But through the lens of strategic planning, they become the bricks and mortar of your food moat.
I’m often asked, “Tony, when is the best time to start this process?” My answer is always the same: FIVE YEARS AGO. But the second best time is right now!
Building Your Own Moat
What HECK is doing is a blueprint for the entire industry. They aren’t waiting for the government to tell them to change. They aren’t waiting for their competitors to move first. They are leading.

I want you to ask yourself: what are the “critical uncertainties” in your business right now? Is it your supply chain? Your energy costs? Your ability to find high-quality ingredients?
If you aren’t building a moat, you are leaving yourself wide open to the next wave of disruption. And believe me, that wave is coming…
I am so fortunate to spend my days helping businesses navigate these waters. If you’re ready to stop reacting and start leading, I’d love to help you apply the same kind of visionary thinking to your organisation. Whether it’s a 1, 3, 5, 10 or 20-year planning horizon, the time to act is now.
I’ll be speaking more about these topics and how to turn existential threats into strategic opportunities at several upcoming events. I’d love to see you there! You can find my full schedule and register at Tony Hunter Speaker Events.
Let’s be honest: the future of food isn’t just about technology. It’s about the courage to embrace that technology while staying true to your roots. HECK is proving that you can have your heritage and your high-tech too.
Just think about that for a minute… What could your “food moat” look like?
