My take on it all

The USD12 Trillion Economic Defence: AI and the Revolution of Personalised Nutrition

What if I told you that the global food system is hiding a debt so massive it threatens to bankrupt our collective future?

We aren’t talking about a few billion dollars here and there. We are talking about a staggering USD12 trillion annual cost! Just think about that for a minute…

This isn’t just a number on a spreadsheet; it’s an economic asteroid heading straight for us. And if we don’t change how we think about food and health, the impact will be catastrophic. But here’s the good news, I believe we have the ultimate shield. We are standing on the brink of a revolution where data becomes our best economic defence.

Welcome to the age of AI-powered personalised nutrition.

The Invisible Tax on Humanity

The FAO’s latest SOFA report has laid it all bare. The hidden costs of our global agrifood systems have reached USD12 trillion a year. To put that into perspective, that’s more than 10% of global GDP!

And do you know what the biggest driver is? It’s not just environmental damage or social inequality, though those are huge. No, a massive USD8 trillion of that cost comes directly from unhealthy diets and non-communicable diseases (NCDs). We are talking about heart disease, stroke, and diabetes… all largely preventable, yet currently draining our economies dry.

My biggest concern is that we are still trying to solve 21st-century metabolic problems with 20th-century “one-size-fits-all” tools. For decades, the industry has relied on broad dietary guidelines that treat every human body like it’s the same biological machine. But we know better now! We know that your body responds to a carbohydrate differently than mine. We know that our microbiomes are as unique as our fingerprints.

Continuing with a generic approach isn’t just bad science, it’s bad business. It’s an unsustainable weight on our healthcare systems and a massive lost opportunity for the food and beverage industry.

The Shift: From Generic to Granular

We are moving away from the era of “mass production” and entering the era of “mass personalisation.” This is where things get really exciting!

I am absolutely delighted to see how quickly Generative AI is merging with biotechnology and wearable tech. We are finally moving past the stage where “personalised nutrition” meant just choosing between low-fat or high-protein. We are entering a world of real-time, data-driven biological feedback.

Imagine a world where your smartwatch doesn’t just tell you how many steps you’ve taken, but tells you exactly what your blood glucose level will do if you eat that specific muffin in front of you. Even better, imagine a world where the food company that made that muffin has used AI to optimise its ingredients for your specific demographic or health profile.

This is the “Economic Defense” I’m talking about. By using AI to tailor nutrition to the individual, we can start chipping away at that USD8 trillion health debt. We can transform health threats into strategic opportunities.

Data: The Ultimate Strategic Asset

In my work with major brands I often tell leaders that they aren’t just in the food business anymore, they are in the data and wellness business.

If you aren’t thinking about how to integrate personalised data into your business model, you’re essentially flying blind. Personalised data is the most valuable commodity of the next decade. It allows businesses to move from being “commodity providers” to “health partners.”

Just look at the 5 technologies that will dominate the future of food. AI and the microbiome are right at the top of that list! When we combine these, we get a level of insight that was unimaginable just five years ago.

Data-driven dining

I’ve seen so many organisations view the rising cost of health and the demand for personalisation as a threat. But I see it as the single greatest opportunity in the history of the food industry!

The companies that will win in the next decade are the ones that realise their job is to help their customers stay healthy and productive. If we can reduce that USD12 trillion hidden cost by even 10% through AI-driven nutrition, we are talking about creating USD1.2 trillion in economic value.

That is an amazing goal to strive for!

Economic Defense Graph

We have the technology. We have the data. What we need now is the vision and the leadership to make it happen. Leaders need to be brave enough to ask the hard questions and look beyond the next quarter’s earnings.

Are You Ready for the Revolution?

The question isn’t whether personalised nutrition is coming. The question is: will your business be part of the solution, or will it be part of the USD12 trillion problem?

I’m travelling globally to speak about these shifts, and the energy out there is incredible! If you want to see where I’ll be next or book me to speak at your next event, please check out my speaking schedule here. I’d love to meet you and hear your thoughts on how we can build a more resilient food system.

Let’s stop viewing the future with fear and start viewing it with curiosity and wonder. The USD12 trillion challenge is massive, yes, but our capacity for innovation is even greater.

Let’s get to work!
