For years I’ve been talking about the difference between “Food Security” and “Food Sovereignty”. Many countries are food secure because they have the money to buy whatever they want, like Singapore. But, like Singapore, many countries are not food sovereign, they don’t have an in country food supply. They are inherently vulnerable in a volatile world.
Have you ever thought about food as a weapon of war? Or better yet, a shield for national security? In the UK, the answer is a resounding YES!
It’s great to see a fresh £50M co-investment pouring into UK agri-tech right now. This isn’t just some small-scale trial; it’s a serious bet on the future. We’re talking about everything from AI-driven robotics to fungal biopesticides. What we are witnessing is the birth of “Sovereign Food Tech.”
Why “Sovereign” Matters
Just think about this for a minute… traditionally, we’ve thought about food security in terms of full warehouses and open trade routes. But in a world of increasing disruption, that’s no longer enough!
True resilience comes from owning the technology and means of production that feeds your population.
Look at companies like FA Bio and Rhizocore. They aren’t just “improving yields.” They are becoming the essential building blocks of national survival! FA Bio is pioneering “living” biopesticides to protect vital crops like wheat, while Rhizocore uses native fungi to supercharge tree survival. These are nature-based solutions scaled by high-tech ambition.
Transforming Risk into Advantage
By developing these capabilities domestically, nations can transform existential risks into powerful strategic advantages. It’s about reducing reliance on synthetic imports and volatile global supply chains.
My biggest concern of the old way of thinking is that it’s too reactive. We can’t just wait for the next crisis to realise we’ve outsourced our survival!
